Windows Series

The urban landscape is one of striking architecture and symmetry, from the buildings themselves to the city plans they fill. The visual repetitiveness of the windowed exteriors of these structures while intuitive and soothing does not reveal much about their interiors. Behind these windows are people working and living in as many different ways as the number of windows we see. My Windows Series explores the sea of windows that define my city. Windows not only frame the lives within, they reflect the world outside. Light creates striking, abstract images that decorate these structures. From the mottled images of the nieghboring buildings to the startling mirrored picture of a cloud-filled blue sky, they are always incredibly interesting and add another dimension to this setting. I begin each Window by exploring new color relationships through the layering of each color of paint. I am often torn at this stage. I am drawn to the smooth final layer of black and hesitate to violate this surface. My eagerness to expose what surprises lie within wins out and I begin to scrape away the layers, creating each unique window. My sculptural treatment of the encaustic medium gives the piece dimensional interest. I offer my Windows as a testament to the complex and yet simple beauty of an urban landscape. The organic quality and textural nature of the wax brings to life these brick and steel structures.
